Summary

Set in a world on the edge of an apocalyptic flood, this heart-stoppingly romantic fantasy debut is perfect for fans of Rachel Hartman and Rae Carson。

In a world bound for an epic flood, only a chosen few are guaranteed safe passage into the new world once the waters recede。 The Kostrovian royal court will be saved, of course, along with their guards。 But the fate of the court's Royal Flyers, a lauded fleet of aerial silk performers, is less certain。 Hell-bent on survival, Principal Flyer, Natasha Koskinen, will do anything to save the Flyers, who are the only family she's ever known。 Even if anything means molding herself into the type of girl who could be courted by Prince Nikolai。 But unbeknownst to Natasha, her newest recruit, Ella Neves, is driven less by her desire to survive the floods than her thirst for revenge。 And Ella's mission could put everything Natasha has worked for in peril。

As the oceans rise, so too does an undeniable spark between the two flyers。 With the end of the world looming, and dark secrets about the Kostrovian court coming to light, Ella and Natasha can either give in to despair 。 。 。 or find a new reason to live。

I’m always down for a good apocalyptic book, and Girls at the Edge of the World, scratched that itch perfectly。 The story takes place on the eve of a global flood that threatens the future of humanity。 If you’re thinking Noah’s Arc, then you’ve got the right idea。 But instead of just one boat, there’s a royal fleet。 The only problem is they can only save so many。Natasha, a Royal Flyer (think aerial silks), is determined to get on one of those ships, even if it means pretending to be who everyone I’m always down for a good apocalyptic book, and Girls at the Edge of the World, scratched that itch perfectly。 The story takes place on the eve of a global flood that threatens the future of humanity。 If you’re thinking Noah’s Arc, then you’ve got the right idea。 But instead of just one boat, there’s a royal fleet。 The only problem is they can only save so many。Natasha, a Royal Flyer (think aerial silks), is determined to get on one of those ships, even if it means pretending to be who everyone thinks she should be instead of who she actually is。 Ella, on the other hand, has something else in mind entirely。 She’s the new recruit, and she’s hellbent on revenge against the kingdom that took everything from her。 But when these two cross paths, something interesting happens。The alternating chapters put us in the shoes of both heroines, and it’s nice to see different sides of the same story。 After reading so many fantasy books where homophobia either doesn’t exist or is merely a footnote, it was jarring to see it front and center in Girls at the Edge of the World。 Then again, that kind of prejudice is very real even today, and exploring those themes and watching the protagonists overcome those issues can be extremely cathartic。 Just make sure you’re prepared for that when you pick it up。 。。。more

”The storms can do what they want to me。 Tear me apart。 Drown me。 But I’ll ask the sea to save her。”Girls at the Edge of the World is a story told through Natasha and Ella’s perspectives。 Natasha is a royal flyer, one of the aerial silk performers of Kostrovia, set in a world that’s only a few months away from imminent destruction。 Ella is on a mission to assassinate King Nikolai, for murdering his sister Cassia, who was also Ella’s lover。 So she goes undercover as a new recruit of the flyer ”The storms can do what they want to me。 Tear me apart。 Drown me。 But I’ll ask the sea to save her。”Girls at the Edge of the World is a story told through Natasha and Ella’s perspectives。 Natasha is a royal flyer, one of the aerial silk performers of Kostrovia, set in a world that’s only a few months away from imminent destruction。 Ella is on a mission to assassinate King Nikolai, for murdering his sister Cassia, who was also Ella’s lover。 So she goes undercover as a new recruit of the flyers to carry out her plan。 But she can’t deny the tension and connection she has with Natasha。Firstly, I loved the apocalyptic approach weaves into the story。 It gives us an idea of what the world could end up like if we don’t do the needful to maintain its nature。 The beginning of the story was strong。 It was interesting to learn both of the protagonists backstories and connect with their personalities。I also liked the fact that the side characters weren’t very one-sided and were developed on as much as the MCs。 The middle of the story was slow as not a lot was really happening。 Towards the last 30 percent of the book, it picked up again and it was so worth it!The ending was left open-ended, which I’m not very concerned about as it definitely leaves space for a sequel。 I would really love to know what happens to all the other side characters。 Overall, I would recommend this is you’re looking for a thought-provoking, SFF read with an amazing slowburn sapphic romance。 ”Everyone dies sooner or later,” Natasha says。 She laces her fingers through mine。 “Wouldn’t you rather live first?” 。。。more

It slowly starts to pick up and the second half is absolutely captivating。 Robson's writing is truly very lovely! However, the ending is a bit of a let down because a lot is uncovered in the last few pages and everything just suddenly ends on an open note。 It would open perfectly for a sequel (HINT HINT!! I want one!! Desperately!!) or at the very least, an epilogue。 I actually had to double check that I was actually on the last page because I couldn't believe it was ending like that。While there is a romance, I wouldn't classify this as a romance book by any means。 This is the slowest of slow burns that, while it finishes in great proclamations of love and dramatic acts, is very minimally developed, which is odd considering the depth and detail given to the other relationships in the book。 I really wanted more between them, more mounting romantic tension and moments that would help add up to the finale。 However, there is a lot of development in the friendships between the main characters and the flyers which I loved。 The side characters, from the other flyers to the charismatic and cruel Gospodin, are all well developed and make a great cast, though I would've loved to see more of Nikolai。 I loved reading the ensemble scenes the most - please read for lovely found family vibes。 Absolutely fascinating world building with the storms and the traditions/religions。 It did get a little confusing because I think? The storms count down? (Clearly I am still confused even after finishing the book。) But small confusions aside, I really loved reading about this world and would absolutely love a sequel。 Thank you to PenguinTeen for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!Content warnings (may be incomplete, may contain spoilers): Murder, blood, death of multiple secondary characters, environmental disasters, homophobia, racism, plague, poisoning, violence, religious imagery & bigotry。 。。。more

This is was imaginative, queer and absolutely fantastic。It's told from two perspectives。 Natasha is the head flyer for the royal flyers (she performs on aerial silks), and I loved her not quite as much as Ella, but still a lot! She was intelligent, feisty and very honest, which I love to see in characters。 Ella is one of my all time favorite YA characters: courageous, deceiving and unapologetically queer。 (Basically who I wish I was) The side characters were also very well developed。 The other flyers consistently made me laugh, and didn't steal the spotlight too much, but were still mermorable。 Maren and Nikolai were interesting and layered characters, and I wasn't expecting what happened to either of them。The idea (plot) was SO GOOD。 LGBT+, Climate Change, Royals?!?! Amazing。 Loved the idea a lot。Thankfully, the execution (pacing+writing) was fantastic, too! The pacing was just right: I usually have complaints about the too fast pacing in fantasy, but this wasn't rushed at all! The writing style was humorous and sharp, with lots of banter (Love to see it) The romance was very tame and sweet, and I'm excited to see how this relationship progresses if/when there is a second book! All in all, I really didn't have any major complaints for this, go read it!Anticipation: 4: Amazing setup!Enjoyment: 5: YES YES YES--> 4。5 stars 。。。more

Thank you to Netgalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。 The land of Kostrov is destined to be flooded。 Only those who are lucky or privileged will make it onto the Royal Fleet and survive。 Until recently, the Royal Flyers were always counted among its passengers。 When Natasha learns they won't be on it, she and her trainer come with a plan for her to become the Queen and convince her new husband to add the flyers。 Ella on the other hand, is here for revenge。 Thank you to Netgalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。 The land of Kostrov is destined to be flooded。 Only those who are lucky or privileged will make it onto the Royal Fleet and survive。 Until recently, the Royal Flyers were always counted among its passengers。 When Natasha learns they won't be on it, she and her trainer come with a plan for her to become the Queen and convince her new husband to add the flyers。 Ella on the other hand, is here for revenge。 King Nikolai killed her lover and his own sister and Ella is determined to make him, she doesn't care if she dies for it。 She joins the Flyers in order to get access to Nikolai, but she can seem to keep out of Natasha's path。 I loved the world of Kostrov。 It’s far from perfect but it’s tense and fascinating。 I loved the history of the Royal Flyers and seeing something that's both beautiful and athletic be celebrated for it。 Some of the climate stuff makes me a bit anxious—mainly because my overeager brain is ready to apply it to today, but the sense of danger is very much alive in this book! Between the two main characters, they have my heart。 Ella came running onto the page ready for murder and I was all swoons over here! Natasha is more of the cautious but will have a solid plan for revenge type。 It was so easy to love these two, but it did take me a bit longer to love them together。 We didn't really get too many hints that Natasha might even think of Ella that way until well over halfway。 I really hope there's a sequel because the ending was so open。 I cry! Lastly, the way the Storms were described was confusing。 There are ten and I could never tell if they had already happened, were about to start or some had happened and some hadn't。 Honestly, still am a bit confused。 。。。more

There was something that captivated my attention in this book。 In this dystopian world where recurring world ending floods wipe out most of the population。 Only the select few nobles gets to board a ship and survive。Natasha has plans to get on that ship by marrying the king。 Ella wants to kill this king no matter the cost。Their paths cross and they form a friendship that turns into more。 I really enjoyed the slow burn romance and the dystopian tale this book presented。 I was pleasantly surprised

(4。5/5 stars) AHHH i was anticipating this book so much and it did not disappoint。 The beginning was a little slow, but when the pace started to pick up it just kept going that I couldn’t put the book down。 There were so many things about this book to love; the two main characters, Natasha and Ella, the writing, THE WORLD-BUILDING!!! The concept of the flood was so interesting, I’m really hoping there’s going to be a sequel for this。

brb waiting for more especially the sapphic goodness provided by this book? I maybe an easy sell on dystopians now, but the writing is what really got me for this one。 I received an ecopy of this book through Netgalley; however, my opinions are my own

Now, to be completely honest, there were some slow patches in this book。 The pacing alternated between fast, plot driven moments that lead to a lot of action and character development and then slowed down and coasted on more minor moments。 The slow moments weren't bad, but if you're looking for a story that keeps a fast pace and pushes you through to the end, you might struggle with this book。 I appreciated the slower moments - it gave us time to get to know our main characters, Ella and Natasha Now, to be completely honest, there were some slow patches in this book。 The pacing alternated between fast, plot driven moments that lead to a lot of action and character development and then slowed down and coasted on more minor moments。 The slow moments weren't bad, but if you're looking for a story that keeps a fast pace and pushes you through to the end, you might struggle with this book。 I appreciated the slower moments - it gave us time to get to know our main characters, Ella and Natasha, as well as their friends and fellow flyers, but it is a noticeable slowness。 The thing that really struck my interest were the characters。 Ella is seeking revenge for her girlfriend, an exiled princess, who was murdered by her brother。 Natasha is trying to find a way to survive the end of the world, especially since her mother didn't。 Ella doesn't mind if she dies and Natasha is doing everything she can to beat the odds。 Both girls have completely different motivations and yet, somehow, their stories intertwine and it is amazing。 The world building is also fantastic。 I loved the political, religious, and cultural background we get。 Everything is so well thought out and made the world feel so real as I was reading it。 I appreciated the commentary on religion - that just because one religion says its the truth, doesn't mean that others don't have their own truth in it too。 We also see the effects of a closeness between church and state, which can obviously get very messy。 And this book is addicting。 I was so wrapped up in Natasha and Ella's stories that I didn't even consider other possible endings。 Like I was actually shocked by the ending and I'm still reeling from it。 Natasha is determined to save the flyers, silk dancers who lift themselves high into the sky, and will do anything to save them from the Floods。 Even if it means courting and marrying the Prince, Nikolai。 One thing I wished we got more of were fleshed out scenes with Nikolai。 For the most part, he's kind of this unattainable character, one we rarely see and hear from。 And the moments we do see him are short and to the point。 I wished we could have gotten to know his character more, especially since he was the "love interest" for Natasha for most of the book。 Meanwhile, with Ella, watching her try to formulate her revenge was intense。 Grief stricken by the loss of her girlfriend, Ella has no one, except for her girlfriend's aunt。 And she's only really there to help Ella exact her revenge so she can take the throne。 But when Ella joins the flyers and starts to work towards her plan, it's clear that its way harder than they both thought and what if Ella doesn't want to die anymore? Watching her go through that emotional journey was so 。。。 satisfying。 It just felt like Ella really found herself and accepted that just because she was devastated by this loss didn't mean she had to sacrifice her life for it, or that she couldn't find love elsewhere。 I think my favorite thing about this book, besides the constant reminder of the apocalypse everyone is about to face, are the relationships。 Watching Ella become friends with the flyers and find her place with them。 Natasha fighting for her friends with everything she has and being willing to give up herself to Nikolai to save them。 Natasha and Ella becoming friends and then maybe something more。 The strength of these relationships really carried the story for me, even during times of slowness in the plot。 And even in slow moments, the plot line is still strong。 There really wasn't much in this story that I didn't like and by the end, I was so upset there was nothing left to read。 No more pages to tell me what happens next。 I kept hitting my screen, trying to get it to turn the page, before I realized the book was finished。 It was so sad。 Overall, if you like sapphic romances, end of the world themes, some religious/political commentary, or stories about pure survival - this is a book you need to pick up! 。。。more

“The storms can do what they want to me。 Take me apart。 Drown me。 But I’ll ask the sea to save her。”In short: girl meets boy, boy likes girl, girl falls in love with another girl that she shouldn’t。 Oh yeah and they’re all months away from an apocalyptic flood。 Girls at the Edge of the World was a beautiful debut by Laura Brooke Robson。 The terrifying premise opened the doors for a heart stopping narrative that kept my anxious and scared for all the girls in this story。To begin, like I said befo “The storms can do what they want to me。 Take me apart。 Drown me。 But I’ll ask the sea to save her。”In short: girl meets boy, boy likes girl, girl falls in love with another girl that she shouldn’t。 Oh yeah and they’re all months away from an apocalyptic flood。 Girls at the Edge of the World was a beautiful debut by Laura Brooke Robson。 The terrifying premise opened the doors for a heart stopping narrative that kept my anxious and scared for all the girls in this story。To begin, like I said before, I absolutely love the premise of the book。 The idea of a biblical flood coming to destroy the world as we know it is terrifying。 It made me contemplate my own life and what I would if I were in Natasha and Ella’s shoes。 The impending flood forces these characters to think about what truly matters to them at the end of the day, and the chances we are willing to take to love freely。 I also love the use of stories in this book。 As the author has stated, this is a story about stories。 How stories shape our view of the world and how a lot of them are shaped by a grain of truth。 And how multiple perspectives can be true at once。In this world, there is one major religion that does not allow for any other interpretations of the impending flood。 Natasha and Ella, however, find hope in new stories, and at the end of the day, that’s what matters most when everything tou love is on the line。I loved the discussion of religious fanaticism and the corruption of power。 Everyone believes that they will be saved if they simply believe but we as readers know that is not the case。 The queer romance at the heart of the story was so beautiful and touching。 Ella is a grief stricken girl, hiding behind snark as a way to navigate the world。 All she knows is pain after the storms began to wash away everyone she cared about。 She’s ready to die for revenge and she’s okay with that。 Until she meets Natasha。Natasha has a more optimistic view of her place in life。 All she wants to save herself and the only family she’s ever known。 While Ella is indifferent about death, Natasha has a desperate desire to survive。 What is the difference between surviving and living? I loved being able to question that while reading the book。 I also love the discussion of misogyny and male entitlement。 The homophobia was specifically directed toward women and I thought those topics were really well handled。 I love how the girls found community within each other。 I loved the book but I desperately hope that this ends up being a duilogy because there is SO much potential to explore more of the themes and problems posed in this book。 I think it would help wrap up the world nicely。 Like name it Girls on the Top of the Sea or something, I don’t know lol Also Storm 2, which is Blood, sounds legitimately terrifying and I need to know what happens during it。If I had to describe the dynamic between Ella and Natasha by the end of the book, it’s the scene in SheRa where Catra says “why did you come back? We both know I don’t matter” and Adora replies “you matter to ME” while holding back tears and Catra finally smiles up at her。 If that doesn’t incentivize you to read this book I don’t know what will😌 。。。more

All stories are about the ocean。This is a magical read。 Robson's prose is beautiful。 It's lyrical; melancholy and cozy, tragic and uplifting all at once。 It feels like sitting in a warm library as devastating rains hammer a tin roof, waiting, warm and safe, for the storm to break。 It's your favorite blanket on the coldest, bleakest night。The characters are the heart and soul of the story: The six flyers are all wonderful, lovable girls with distinctive personalities and a lively family dynamic。 All stories are about the ocean。This is a magical read。 Robson's prose is beautiful。 It's lyrical; melancholy and cozy, tragic and uplifting all at once。 It feels like sitting in a warm library as devastating rains hammer a tin roof, waiting, warm and safe, for the storm to break。 It's your favorite blanket on the coldest, bleakest night。The characters are the heart and soul of the story: The six flyers are all wonderful, lovable girls with distinctive personalities and a lively family dynamic。 The outside characters — Prince Nikolai, Maret, Gospodin — are intriguing and more complex than they first appear。 They're all struggling for love and survival in the face of an impending apocalypse, and it's superb。 I'm here for friendships that transcend murder。I admit to finding the romance abrupt, but I didn't find it off-putting。 This is a fairy tale, after all, and it would fit right in with Tamm's Collected Fables。 (Two of which are told in full, by the way, and they are absolute highlights。) The book courses with magical realism and spirituality, and I feel like transcendent love fits in perfectly。So — read this for the writing, for the friendships, for the warm & fuzzy melancholy。 Read it to believe in something more。 Robson writes about her "undying belief that you can find the truest magic in nature," and what could be more beautiful than that? 。。。more

I think the story is super interesting and unique and I got through this book in a day because I had to know what happened next。 I'm not usually a fan of dual POVs but I actually enjoyed both characters in this book although I do gravitate toward Natasha。 I think the camaraderie the flyers had was so wholesome and one of the best parts of the book。 I felt like this was mostly character driven as the plot really only "thickens" towards the end of the book which I didn't really mind that much but I did have some gripes that I will mention later。 I think the writing was beautiful and I loved the descriptions that were written and I could put myself into the story。 I was also at the edge of my seat several times which is always fun。 There are a couple reasons this book didn't get 5 stars from me so let's go over them。 First, although I love seeing sapphic romance represented and I liked the connection between the girls you really don't see much romance between the two as they are in the friend phase for the majority of the book。 This isn't necessarily a bad thing but my problem was the insta love at the end。 I felt like they both jumped into the deep end and the growth didn't quite make sense to me。 I also have a problem with the end。 What the heck? You're just going to leave it like that? There are so many unanswered questions and it left a bad taste in my mouth to not know what the heck happened。 I'm super excited to read more from this author in the future as I believe this is her debut novel and I think she's got great potential。 。。。more
